Kyleigh’s baby shower is fast approaching and we’re scrambling to get everything just perfect. Approximately 50 invitations have been handed out and I am a “Better to much than not enough.” type of person (I was a Girl Scout- Always be prepared), we decided the cheapest and easiest cake would be CUPCAKES! Cupcakes are SO versatile. You can make them classy or fun. For this party, we’re opting for a little of both.
Since we plan on making about 48 cupcakes and none of us are expert cake decorators, I looked for something that we could put on top of each cupcake. I am absolutely not in love with the old school sugar shapes. I decided to hunt through Etsy.com to try to find a little inspiration. Oh how I LOVE Etsy! Once again, I found the perfect touch to our cupcakes. Cupcake Picks!
They looked so incredibly easy to make. You could make these for any type of party. You are only limited to your imagination and the shapes of your paper punches. I decided I would try the flower shape to match the bedding that I had made. These are going to be the colors for the shower. Here’s how I decided to do it.
I purchased 2 scalloped circle punches in different sizes and some pretty scrapbooking paper.
The bigger punch was used with the scrapbooking paper. For the smaller circle, I knew I wanted to personalize it a bit so I made a graphic with my photo editing software. You can use Gimp for free if you don’t have Photoshop. I made the graphic a little smaller than the punch and tiled it on my paper so it would print like 20 to a page. Next, punch everything out and glue the smaller one to the bigger one. I think I should have used a heavier paper than just copy paper for the front. Next time, I will also try glue dots to make the front circle pop a little. After that, just tape a toothpick onto the back and you have an awesome decoration for what could have been a plain jane dessert.
You can use these cupcake picks for other stuff besides cupcakes too! Stick them in appetizers, make fruit skewers and put a pretty topper on the skewer, use them for decoration by sticking a piece of foam and a pick in a small flower pot…the possibilities are endless.
